Over 300 people were invited to the dinner
In conjunction with the Superbike World Championship’s major season sponsor Alfa Romeo, on Thursday there was the first ever WSBK Gala Night at Misano, held outdoors on the main straight.
The evening consisted of the conventional welcome drinks followed by a fine dining experience, but the tables were set out on a massive black carpet that covered most of the start/finish straight. Another carpet, naturally a red one, ran all the way from the very start of the paddock gates for invited guests, right into pitlane and onto the startline, all lined at intervals of a few metres by hundreds of candles in metal bowls.
Over 300 people were invited to the dinner, but the most unusual aspect was that there was an almost endless cabaret of circus performers, a trio of wandering comedy saxophone players, burlesque entertainers and finally a rock’n’roll piano player of great talent on stage, to amuse the occasionally bewildered but always enthralled audience of invited guests, VIPs, star riders and media.
It was an unusual initiative welcomed by all, and it was a well-organised and undeniably glamorous venture, and held on a night when everyone’s work commitments allowed them to attend with no pressure pulling them away to prior commitments.
